The Union Cabinet, chaired by the
Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the conduct of the Census of India 2027
at an estimated cost of ₹11,718.24
crore. The upcoming Census marks a historic milestone as it will
be the first fully
digital Census in the country's history and will also include Caste Enumeration as
part of the Population Enumeration phase.
Census Schedule
The Census will be conducted in two
phases:
Phase
I – Houselisting and Housing Census
April to September 2026
This phase will collect information
relating to housing conditions, household amenities, assets, and related
socio-economic indicators.
Phase
II – Population Enumeration
February 2027
For the Union Territory of Ladakh,
snow-bound areas of Jammu & Kashmir, and the States of Himachal Pradesh and
Uttarakhand, Population Enumeration will be conducted during September 2026 due to

Census 2027 introduces several
technological advancements aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and

Inclusion of Caste
Enumeration
One of the most significant features
of Census 2027 is the inclusion of Caste
Enumeration.
The Cabinet Committee on Political
Affairs, in its meeting held on 30
April 2025, approved the inclusion of caste data in the upcoming
Census. Accordingly, caste information will be collected electronically during
the Population
Enumeration phase.
This initiative is expected to provide
authentic and comprehensive socio-demographic data that will assist governments
in evidence-based policy formulation, equitable allocation of resources,
targeted welfare measures, and inclusive development planning.
Nationwide Census
Operations
The Census will cover every household
across the country, making it one of the world's largest administrative and

Approximately 30 lakh Census functionaries,
including Enumerators, Supervisors, Master Trainers, Charge Officers, and
District Census Officers, will be deployed for data collection, supervision,
and monitoring.
Most Enumerators will be government
teachers and other public servants appointed by the respective State
Governments and District Administrations. Since Census duties are performed in
addition to their regular responsibilities, suitable honorarium will be
provided.

campaign will be launched to ensure:

Around 18,600 technical professionals will be
engaged for approximately 550
days, creating nearly 1.02
crore man-days of employment. Besides generating temporary
employment, the digital nature of the Census will contribute significantly to
skill development in digital data handling, monitoring, coordination, and
information management.
